The Math Monopoly: How Texas Instruments Walled Off Reality

I was a terrible student in high school, but that laziness drove me to write my very first program. Like every other student I was packing around a TI-83, those old monochrome displays version not the nice ones kids have these days,

But they aren’t just a calculator company. They are an aggressive patent monopolizer and a foundational architect of the modern military-industrial complex.

The Problem: Toll-Gating the Laws of Physics

You cannot technically patent $2+2=4$. But TI and companies like them found the ultimate legal exploit: they patented the efficiency of the math by tying it to specialized hardware, specifically Digital Signal Processors (DSPs).

If you look at the literature, Texas Instruments heavily documented the implementation of Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and Inverse Discrete Fourier Transform (IDFT) algorithms on their TMS320 DSP platform. They took standard algebraic substitutions—like exploiting Hermite symmetry to skip redundant operations and cut the computational load in half—and claimed legal ownership over that sequence of logic gates.

I'm a firm believier that mathematics is discovered, not invented. When a corporation patents the most computationally efficient way to invert a DFFT, they are robbing the global developer ecosystem. If you are writing a C wrapper for a library or dealing with spatial processing, you shouldn't have to worry about a Fortune 500 company's legal team coming after you for figuring out an optimal, practical solution to a standard geometric problem.

The Dark Reality: From DSPs to Defense Contracts

Why does Texas Instruments care so much about hyper-efficient signal processing, spatial math, and fast real-time calculation of frequency domains?

Because before TI spun off its defense electronics business to Raytheon in the late 90s, they literally invented the Paveway laser-guided bomb and the AGM-88 HARM missile. Their silicon, their DSPs, and their patented algorithms still form the backbone of these systems.

The math we are talking about—the fast, real-time inversion of signals—is exactly what allows a missile to process telemetry and adjust its fins mid-flight. It is a direct pipeline. They privatize mathematical discoveries to build and optimize precision weapons. Those weapons, relying on the very logic gates and algorithms TI walled off from the public, are the same ones being dropped on civilians and fueling the genocide in the Middle East right now. It is the ultimate perversion of computer science.

The Solution: Tearing Down the Walled Garden

The algorithms we use to process audio, telemetry, and physics shouldn't belong to a defense contractor's legal team.

As software engineers, we need to be acutely aware of what our code and the underlying silicon are actually being used to target. We must reject the culture of patenting logic, advocate for open mathematics, and refuse to let our work be weaponized by a walled garden.
